Learn to surf from home
Surfing outside the water will help you improve your technique. Today, we propose a series of activities that you can practice at home to become a true surfing professional.
From our experience at Laga Surf Camp we have observed that some people progress much faster than others, and perhaps if you are among them you are wondering: why is this?
People who learn faster usually do so because they practice other sports that have a direct transfer to surfing, as well as being in good physical shape. That is why students who come from swimming or climbing are usually good students, since they have a very developed upper body, which allows them to paddle with strength.
Surfing starts at home
Therefore, taking advantage of the fact that during this time of quarantine many people have the opportunity to do sports at home, we bring you some easy and basic exercises that we hope will help you master the waves:
- Standing up: Standing up has to be fast and effective. So we can practice standing up at home with a diver, this will help to obtain greater instability, as if we were in the water.
- The paddling stroke: it is very important because we must match the speed of the wave. The bigger the wave, the more speed it will carry, therefore, we can imitate these movements with some rubber bands on the door simulating the paddling stroke.
There will be 2 types of paddling: calm (towards the peak) and explosive (when catching the wave. - Another point that we usually observe is elasticity: if we notice that when standing up we have trouble moving the front foot off the board, we lack elasticity, therefore, we will train daily to improve this movement.
This is because sometimes we see people with very good physical shape, but with a lack of elasticity, which limits their progress. - Passing waves: we can do a simulation training by doing push-ups on the diver, with only one foot supported and exchanging it.
- Balance: We can also practice balance and position with a diver, roller or similar.
At Laga Surf Camp we believe that these five simple points will help improve your surfing both out of the water and if you are just starting out.
Exercise: key to mastering the waves
Keep in mind that doing exercises out of the water is essential, since, in a 2-hour introductory swim, there are not many waves that we catch, and each wave lasts only a few seconds, so good training will give us a good transfer when going into the water, and even more so for all those people who live far from the sea and cannot practice it regularly.
We hope that you find these tips useful and that you include them in your sports calendar.
