Laga Surf Camp and its commitment as a sustainable surf school

Laga Surf Camp and the Oceans' sustainability commitments

European Charter for Sustainable Tourism

For over a year now, at Laga surf camp, we have been working on a new project to incorporate new environmental strategies into our surf school in order to contribute to the development of sustainable tourism within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.

In search of CETS

CETS (European Charter for Sustainable Tourism) accreditation is an objective for the coming years, which is why we have signed up to the charter through the board of trustees of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, incorporating a series of commitments into our surf school and our day-to-day life.

Some examples of these commitments are:

  • Organize conservation, awareness and care activities (nature day) within our surf camps and surf courses.
  • Improve the cleaning of wetsuits in a more sustainable and ecological way
  • Implement the use of ecological sun creams

¿Cómo colaborar y reducir el impacto de los residuos?

Laga Surf Camp: A sustainable surf school

These are some examples of some of the commitments made, since the care and maintenance of beaches and oceans is a situation that concerns us all, which is why we must maintain a collective awareness regarding its importance, as we mentioned in our last post on how to avoid plastics in the sea.

We remember that almost 50% of the plastic that we dump into the sea is single-use plastic, that is, bottles, caps, cotton swabs… and, in addition, 18% is non-plastic waste, such as cigarette butts, something common among smokers on the beach.

All this waste that we deposit on the beaches and that ends up reaching the ocean causes serious problems, both in maritime life, as well as problems that can be extrapolated outside the water and that affect us. They affect us at an individual level. The most obvious are the health problems they cause in fish, due to entanglement in plastics, habitat degradation or exposure to chemicals from the waste mentioned above. The latter also affects us. : Apart from this, all this is also a question of economics, considering that all the rubbish that ends up in the oceans has a value of between 250 and 695 million euros.

Finally, speaking in terms of climate issues, we could say that recycling 1 million tons of plastic could be equivalent to the retirement of 1 million cars, in terms of CO2 emissions.

From Laga Surf Camp we invite you to become aware and in the next season be respectful of the environment and together avoid greater consequences by avoiding waste on beaches and in nature.
