When we talk about agrotourism or nekazal etxea, many of you ask us what it consists of, especially if you are not residents of the Basque Country, an autonomous community where this form of tourist accommodation is especially recognised and increasingly used and appreciated by society.
In its origins, agrotourism was started as an economic and work supplement for all those people who lived in the countryside and were dedicated to both agricultural and livestock work, that is, those who had a farm or livestock farm.
At that time, hosting tourists in private homes was an economic alternative, a way to earn extra money, and at the same time, it served to publicize their activities in rural areas.
Today this is still the case, but the concept of agrotourism has evolved a lot, as rural houses are increasingly specialized in tourist accommodation, offering very good quality services, with private rooms that include a bathroom, breakfast, kitchen, etc. But despite this and although agricultural and livestock farms are still maintained, sometimes they may not be as sustainable as they were in ancient times, hence the need to look for alternatives that make them one of the best options for visiting and getting closer to a place, always in the middle of a privileged environment.
Thus, one of the essential requirements for agrotourism is to have a farm or livestock farm, since this is what makes it possible to call it agrotourism.
In our case, Laga Surf Camp is not only a surf camp, but also an agrotourism establishment, as it has its own farm and livestock farm. In this agrotourism establishment, we have a flock of sheep, as well as chickens, and we also plant apple trees for the production of cider, using the native apple from the Basque Country.
As an addition to this very special and sought-after accommodation, we would like to introduce you to our organic garden, which we prepare every year so that we can eat and enjoy these local products and benefit from their properties; and at Laga Surf Camp we have planted a wide variety of fruits and vegetables: lettuce, tomatoes, Gernika peppers, beans, pumpkin and other vegetables… as well as free-range chicken eggs.
From our surf camp in the Basque Country, we would like to invite you to visit us. In this remote place you can learn to surf but you will also have the opportunity to discover our agrotourism, surrounded by nature in one of the best environments on the Basque coast, the Urdaibai biosphere reserve, and if you also visit us in high season, it is very possible that you will be able to purchase some of these organic products.
Don’t wait any longer and come and discover our agrotourism, at Laga Surf Camp you will enjoy surfing in the heart of nature.
