7-day summer route through the Basque Country
You’ve been planning to visit the Basque Country and enjoy its wonders for a long time. How much time do you need to see the most important things?
It all depends on the time you have and what you want to visit, because the big problem is the amount of things to see and the many activities that Euskadi offers. We propose a 7-day plan with some of our best recommendations. We will include different alternatives and the most important things that you cannot miss.
Here is the 7-day itinerary. What you can decide is the order of the routes you want to visit.
DAY 1. SAN SEBASTIAN.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. We can start with a walk along the famous Playa de la Concha, one of the best beaches in all of Europe. At the end of the walk you reach the end of the Bay and contemplate the set of sculptures by Eduardo Chillida, called the Peine del Viento. Another attraction of San Sebastian is the Paseo Nuevo, another must-see site. It is a route that surrounds Mount Urgull where you can enjoy the wonders of the Cantabrian coast. You can see different buildings and get close to the port. If you still have energy, you can go up Mount Igueldo on its funicular and admire its views. You can finish by touring the historic center and take the opportunity to try the famous spectacular pintxos.
DAY 2. GIPUZKOA
We suggest you visit several of the most beautiful towns in the area. There are only a few, but they are worth spending time visiting. Don’t miss Pasaia, Zarautz, Zumaia, Getaría and Hondarribia.
DAY 3. BILBAO
Bilbao is another great city with a lot to see. You can’t miss the Guggenheim Museum. Just visiting its surroundings and seeing the famous flower dog or the giant spider and contemplating the spectacular structure of the Museum is worth it. Bilbao has many emblematic buildings to see, its old town, its famous estuary and above all its gastronomy.
DAY 4. BEACH AND SURF
DAY. 5. SAN JUAN DE GAZTELUGATXE and BUTRON CASTLE.
The first is a spectacular chapel and very famous since Game of Thrones was filmed. The second is one of the most beautiful medieval castles located in the middle of a forest that seems straight out of a fairy tale.
DAY 6. THE RIOJA ALAVESA.
Land of vineyards and wineries. We recommend two towns in particular: Labastida and Laguardia. They are beautiful.
DAY 7. VITORIA.
To end our week we have chosen Vitoria. In addition to having many monuments and squares, it is a “green” city due to its large amounts of green areas. It is also very pleasant and very accessible to visit without a car.
In short, to get to know the main parts of Euskadi, the minimum would be to do it in a week, although there will always be things left to see.
